February Meeting
Tuesday 18th February 2020 Topic - Bonsai Presenters - Zyggy & JoAnn Reinoga & Bruce Argaet Waverley Bonsai Group This morning the members were treated to a wonderful talk and demonstration by three members of the Waverley Bonsai Group. JoAnn gave us an informative history of Bonsai, and how it actually had it's roots in China rather than Japan. Bruce explained the differences between the Chinese and Japanese styles of Bonsai, and Zyggy gave us a demonstration of shaping. They answered the many questions from the members and they also brought along a large display of various types and styles of Bonsai. Thank you very much JoAnn, Zyggy and Bruce for a very interesting and enjoyable presentation. Photographic & Video Presentation One of our newer members, Ron Wilson, treated members to a peek at his very impressive garden by way of a video and many wonderful photos. Ron's magnificent garden is very large and beautiful, containing a stunning array of plants and flowers including roses, lavender, various fruit trees and shrubs as well as a vegie garden and more! It is a truly amazing garden of which Ron can be justifiably proud. The members were in awe and enjoyed the presentation greatly. Thank you Ron for sharing your incredible garden with us! People's Choice Award Winner - Ron Lewis Exhibit - Tuberous Begonia Congratulations Ron! One of our long time members, Rebecca Thompson, has very kindly allowed us to share a lovely poem written by her late husband, Walter Thompson, who was also a long time member of the club. Thank you Rebecca. A Poem by Walter Thompson When you feel so lonely, And there is nowhere else to go, Don't feel downhearted For it really isn't so Why not learn about our floral art And what vegetables to grow. You never will feel so lonely With friends you get to know There are flowers on the benches And flowers on the floor. You even get three raffle tickets When you come inside the door. So don't go to the bingo Or the pokies at the pub Just come along to the Whitehorse room And join the Garden club. Next month we will be talking Insects with Ian Moodie, so please come along and join us at 10am on Tuesday 19th March. |

January Meeting
Tuesday 21st January 2020 First Meeting Welcome Back Morning Tea For our first meeting of the year we had a general talk and Q & A session hosted by our President, Heather Armstrong. Members had many interesting and fun stories about their gardening adventures over the holidays. Many thanks to members who brought along refreshments. It was followed by a talk on the history of the Box Hill Garden Club (formerly the Box Hill Horticultural Society) by long time member and former President and Secretary, Bob Yeomans. Thank you Bob for sharing your knowledge and informing our newer members on the long and interesting history of our club. People's Choice Award Winner - Rebecca Thompson Exhibit - Pelargonium Congratulations Rebecca! Next month we'll be having an inspirational talk about the wonderful world of Bonsai by Zyggy Reinoga from the Waverley Bonsai Group, so please come along and join us on Tuesday 18th February at 10am. |

Tuesday 15th October 2019 Topic - Begonias Presenter - Norm Gerraty This month we enjoyed a wonderful and entertaining talk about Begonias from Norm Gerraty, who has been growing Begonias for many years. He spoke about the changing attitudes to gardening and the challenges faced by people who are living in smaller spaces, therefore Norm concentrated on how to grow Begonias in pots. He brought along various types of Begonias and gave us a demonstration using cuttings. He also answered questions from the members. Tuesday 17th September 2019 Topic - Iris Presenter - Terry Nisbet This morning's talk was a real treat for members. Our presenter, Terry Nisbet, is the President of the Victorian Iris Society. Terry is also a past President of the Australian Iris Society. Terry's knowledge of this colourful and striking plant is truly vast, and he kindly shared some of that knowledge with all of us today. It was an extremely interesting talk with some fascinating historical facts thrown in. Terry is a wonderful speaker who gave us a wealth of information as well as a digital display and film depicting the magnificent garden that belongs to Terry and his wife, Shirley, who also came along to join us. Tuesday 20th August 2019 Topic - Oxalis Presenter - Joy Quinn Our presentation today was given by Joy Quinn who spoke to us about Oxalis. Joy has a great love of this somewhat controversial plant which is often regarded as a weed by many. Indeed it can be a very invasive plant, and is not permitted to be grown or sold in N.S.W., but there are over 900 species of Oxalis world wide, many of which have very pretty flowers of various colours. Joy gave us a wonderful digital display accompanied by a delightful talk. She also brought along pots of different kinds of Oxalis and answered questions from the members. Tuesday 16th July 2019 Topic - Chrysanthemums Presenter - William Orange Today our very own member, William Orange, gave us a splendid presentation on Chrysanthemums. He informed us that even though it is the national flower of Japan, it actually originated in China. William went on to give us an interesting historical account of this beautiful flower, as well as a stunning digital display of the many different colours and varieties. He gave us a demonstration on how to take cuttings, and information on how to grow and care for them, as well as answering questions from the members. Thank you very much William for sharing your expertise with us. It is greatly appreciated. Tuesday 18th June 2019 Topic - Salvias Presenter - Lyndi Garnett This month the members were given a very informative talk on that popular addition to the garden - Salvias. The speaker was Lyndi Garnett who is extremely knowledgeable and happily answered our member's many questions. Lyndi presented a wonderful digital display, as well as bringing along a large array of Salvias for sale. She also had pamphlets and handouts for the members. Tuesday 21st May 2019 Topic - The Eden Project Presenter - June Valentine This month the members were intrigued and delighted to hear June Valentine tell us all about her visit to The Eden Project in Cornwall, England. The Eden Project is a tourist attraction that consists of huge Domes which house thousands of plant species from all over the world. Each enclosure emulates a natural biome so that the plants can survive and thrive. June showed us a video of the construction phase and also the structure once it was completed. She gave us a very informative talk about the history of the project as well as wowing us with amazing images from her video presentation. It's definitely a placed to see if you're visiting the U.K. Thank you very much June for a wonderful talk. It was greatly enjoyed by members. Tuesday 19th March 2019 Topic - Birds & Insects Presenter - Ian Moodie This month the members were treated to something a little different. Ian Moodie gave us a very humorous and amusing talk on how to attract birds to your garden, and information on the various types of birds and insects in your garden. He had the members laughing with his wonderfully entertaining presentation. The digital display had some truly amazing photos of a large variety of birds and insects and was very informative as well.
