17th September 2013

Topic - Camellias

Presenter - Shirley Shallcross

Members were treated to a very informative and excellent data photographic presentation of Camellia types, sizes and colours. Shirley's experience as a grower, exhibitor, judge and official of the Camellia Society for many, many years showed out. She won the undivided attention of the members for 45 minutes. As a current President of the Camellia Society, Shirley led by example with a great presentation full of knowledge and personal experiences. Enjoyed by all.

The Betty Knox Award (Best Exhibit)

An outstanding exhibit of nandina redberries pleased the judge and was awarded the best exhibit. An excited visitor has made her mark on the show bench, showing what she grows, and presented it very well. Erena Norris had cleaned up with her first attempt at show bench exhibiting. Well done Erena.

Other exhibits considered for the top award were vases of sweet peas, Spanish blue bells and some very nice Camellia blooms. Rebecca Thompson entered an outstanding number of quality exhibits.

Popular Vote Award

Bob Yeoman entered a pot of a modern orange Clivia in the container section. One stem of perfect flowers. A very eye-catching exhibit and the members voted accordingly. Bob advised the members it was an un-named seedling. A seedling planted in 2006, it took 4 years to flower and now is in its 7th year it's producing its first off-set (a baby plant of the same variety).
