September Meeting

Tuesday 16th September 2014

Topic - Cymbidium Orchids

Presenter - Barry Robinson

Our guest speaker this month was Barry Robinson, a long time member of the Maroondah Orchid Society. Barry spoke to us about growing and caring for Cymbidium Orchids and he impressed upon us the importance of weekly watering and feeding by having us repeat his favourite catchphrase "Weekly Weekly!" Other tips included using only half the amount of fertilizer shown on the packet otherwise you are at risk of burning the roots. Orchids need lots of light and sun, but once the temperature rises above 30 degrees it is wise to give them a bit of shade - as Barry says "If it's too hot for us, it's too hot for them!" Barry does not recommend planting Orchids in Terracotta pots, stating that plastic pots are ideal as they keep the Orchids warm in Winter. It is advisable to keep them inside in the colder weather as they cannot tolerate frost.

Barry gave us a wonderful digital presentation of various types of Orchids, explaining what to look for when purchasing. He then gave us a demonstration of how to separate and re-pot a Cymbidium Orchid. Members were enthralled. Barry also spoke to us about Bromeliads and passed around various samples. Members took great enjoyment in this with lots of "oohs and aahs" as the samples circulated around the room.

Thank you Barry for a splendid presentation which truly captured our imaginations!

The Betty Knox Award (Best Exhibit)

This month was an incredibly difficult decision for the Judges as there was an amazing array of stunning exhibits to choose from, but their eye was taken by a brilliant pot of Yellow Tulips staged by William Orange. Congratulations William.

Popular Vote Award

The members milled around the Show Bench, truly enjoying the wonderfully colourful sight before them. They also could not go past the beautiful Yellow Tulips and so William has taken out both awards this month - Well done William!
